The events involving The Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists’ (OUN) activity draw attention of numerous researchers, publicists, politicians, and agitators. Many academic texts address the OUN members’ participation in persecution and massacre of Jewish, Polish, and disloyal Ukrainian population, fulfilled under command of Stepan Bandera. There is also research on Taras Borovets’ (Bulba) and his movement. At the same time, academic research on the OUN’s performance led by Andriy Mel’nyk as a matter of fact do not exist. How were OUN (m) activists involved in the Holocaust in 1940–1945 (independently and in collaboration with Germans)? What was their motivations? How this history was described in Ukrainian diaspora narrative (s) and independent Ukraine since 1991? What for research of these questions material provided by Ukrainian diaspora archives (in USA, Canada, France), documents from the archives of the State Security Service of Ukraine, oral history data, such as collections of interviews with Jewish Holocaust survivals, Ukrainians and Poles who were witnesses to the epoch can show? What problems can a historian face while analyzing these documents?

Yuri Radchenko is the director of the Center for Interethnic Relations Research in Eastern Europe (Kharkiv, Ukraine) and associate professor at Institute of Oriental Studies and International Relations ’Kharkiv Collegium’ (Kharkiv). He is currently working on his project ’Andriy Melnyk: the OUN Leader’s Life History and the Memory of Him and His Movement’. Yuri was a post-graduate student (aspirant) at the Department of the History of Ukraine of the V. Karazin Kharkiv National University. His dissertation dealt with ’Nazi Genocide of the Ukrainian Jews in the Military-Administered Area (1941–1943)’. He was recipient of many fellowships: Saul Kagan Claims Conference Fellowship for Advanced Shoah Studies, L. Dennis and Susan R. Shapiro Fellow, Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Fellow in Zentrum für Holocaust-Studien, Institut für Zeitgeschichte (Munich, Germany), Yahad In Unum Research Fellow, Yad Hanadiv/Beracha Foundation post-doctoral fellowship, Post-doctoral fellow of The Israeli Inter-University Academic Partnership in Russian and East European Studies, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Yuri has recently finished his monograph ’Hilfspolizei, Self-government and the Holocaust in Ukrainian-Russian-Belorussian Borderland: Motivation, Identity, Collective Portrait and Memory’ (upcoming). His academic interests include history of the Holocaust, Ukrainian-Jewish relations in 1920s–1940s, collaboration with Nazis in Eastern Europe and history of right radical movements in Europe in 1920s-1940s.
