Center for Yiddish Culture, Polish Association for Yiddish Studies, and Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw invite you to celebrate the publication of the Polish edition of Professor Nathan’s Cohen book Książki, pisarze, gazety: żydowskie życie literackie w Warszawie w latach 1918-1942 (Books, Writers, and Newspapers: The Jewish Literary Life in Warsaw, 1918-1942).

The book was published in Hebrew in 2003, by the Hebrew University Magnes Press, Jerusalem as Sefer, sofer we-iton: Merkaz ha-tarbut ha-Jehudit be-Warsza 1918–1942.

This virtual event will feature a conversation between Professor Nathan Cohen and Professor Monika Adamczyk-Garbowska.

Nathan Cohen is Associate Professor at the Center for Yiddish Studies at Bar Ilan University, Israel. His research focuses on East European Jewish cultural history in the 19th and 20th centuries and on modern Yiddish literature. He is the author of numerous articles in Hebrew, English, Yiddish and Polish. His current research project regarding the changing reading habits in Yiddish in the Russian Empire and Poland between 1865 and 1914, was published in Hebrew under the title: Yiddish – the Linguistic Leap: from a Common Dialect to a Cultural and Literary Language by the Zalman Shazar Center (2020). Since 1998 he has been the associate editor of Yad Vashem Studies.

Monika Adamczyk-Garbowska is Professor of Comparative Literature at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, Poland. She researches and publishes in translation studies, Jewish studies and American literature. Her books include Polska Isaaca Bashevisa Singera – rozstanie i powrót (1994); Contemporary Jewish Writing in Poland: An Anthology (2001, co-editor) and Odcienie tożsamości: Literatura żydowska jako zjawisko wielojęzyczne (2004); Tam był kiedyś mój dom... Księgi pamięci gmin żydowskich (My Home Used to Be There... Memorial Books of Jewish Communities, 2009, co-editor). She has translated more than a dozen books from English and Yiddish into Polish.
