Quizzes from Milejczyce

In 2010 during the renovation of the pre-war school building 70 history quizzes from 1940 were found when replacing the windows. They were once written by Jewish, Polish and Russian children, all attending the same school. In 1940 they were answering questions regarding Pharaoh Ramses the Second and his war with the Hittites.

They were found stuck in between the window frames and the wall of the building. None of them was checked or graded. None of quizzes has never been proven. We do not know if all the children were from Milejczyce. Before the war, the children from surrounding areas, different faiths all went to school in Milejczyce. Local historian of Milejczyce, Mr. Roman Mikołajewicz, who sent us scans of the tests said that teachers at the school who then taught there were not from Milejczyce, but got there after the acquisition of Milejczyce by the Soviet authorities.

Descriptions:

  1. Children from the Public Elementary School in Milejczyce at the end of the school year of 1923/24 (or 1924/25). Photo found within the Milejczyce ghetto area.
  2. In this building before the war the public elementary school in Milejczyce was located.
  3. The so-called New Synagogue, built in 1927.
  4. „Rabbi’s House” at Parkowa 3 Street. The last rabbi in Milejczyce was Aron Izaak Tamares, who was 35 when the Second World War broke out.
  5. Milejczyce baker. Most likely D. Grynberg, which is the only name that appears in 1930 Business Directory for Milejczyce.
  6. The Levinson family against the tile factory of their father, the so called Levinson tilery.
  7. Quiz of Leia Mosiężnik, 6th grade. We found a testimony of her in the Yad Vashem database of Shoah Victims’ Names.
  8. One of the quizzes, its author was Chana Gorfajn.
