Call for papers | Jews in the Multiverse of the Polish Language

We invite you to send abstracts to the conference "Jews in the Multiverse of the Polish Language" co-organized by the Jewish Historical Institute and the Department of Political Communication and Media Policy of the Jagiellonian University. The conference will take place on November 28 and 29, 2023 at the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw. The deadline for applications is August 31, 2023.

Its goal is to analyse the ways in which the words 'Jew', 'Jews', and 'Jewishness' are present in the broadest sense of the Polish language – in colloquial and literary language, in journalistic and scientific language, in the language of politicians and clergy, in linguistically neutral utterances (do such even exist here?) and in propaganda. The anti-Semitic talk will be an important theme here, but not the only one. There is significance in all the linguistic richness (or poverty) involved in naming and describing Jews, the various semantic transformations that serve this purpose.

The conference will have a distinctly multidisciplinary character. Historians and historians – including art historians – political scientists, media scholars, representatives of language and literature studies, anthropologists and film scholars, and lawyers are invited to attend.

The subject matter of 'Jews in the multiverse of the Polish language' is extremely rich. It can be sought in film and audiovisual arts, legal codes and historical journalism, political manifestos and catechisms. We invite you to present cross-cutting themes or case studies, attempts at synthesis or micro-learning results.

The conference will take place on 28 and 29 November 2023 at the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw.

Delet II Project – the “Berlinka” Collection
The Association of the Jewish Historical Institute in Poland, working in cooperation with the Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute, has received a subsidy for the development of the DELET II project from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. The subsidy, granted as part of the programme Digital Culture 2019, will serve to fund the digitalisation of the so-called “Berlinka” collection.

Monuments to Resistance is the largest and so far the most diverse presentation of the works of art about the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in the post-war period (until 1956). The sculptures, monuments, posters, graphics, and photographs selected by the curators bring not only the multidimensionality of the subject and its enormous importance for entire generations but also the difficulties and emotions close to their creators.
