Prof. Paweł Śpiewak, former director of the JHI, has passed away

Yesterday evening we received the sad news about the death of prof. Paweł Śpiewak, historian, sociologist, writer, and former director of the Jewish Historical Institute (2011-2020).

The funeral of Professor Paweł Śpiewak will take place on Sunday, April 2, 2023 at 1 pm at the Jewish Cemetery at Okopowa Street in Warsaw.

 

Prof. Paweł Śpiewak was born in 1951 as the son of the writer, poet and translator Anna Kamieńska and poet and translator Jan Śpiewak. He studied sociology at the University of Warsaw, he received his PhD in 1984, and his habilitation in 2000. He was an activist in "Solidarity" , an academic teacher and from 2005 to 2007 he was a member of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland. From 2011 to 2020 he served as the Director of the Jewish Historical Institute.

Three years ago, he told Olga Drenda about the uniqueness of the place and the team he headed: "Everyone supports the common good by working for the Institute, not only for themselves. Identifying strongly with our joint work. I appreciate it exceptionally. [...] This place has become my life for several long years. To familiarize, I brought my old family table, made of oak. This job changed me a lot." He wished the Institute to "last well and shine well."
