We invite you for a webinar for teachers and educators to discuss Jewish resistance to the Holocaust as exemplified by the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and various forms of Jewish resistance in the Vilnius region (Lithuania). The webinar will take place on March 29, 2023 at 3 pm CEST Warsaw/Brussels time.

We invite you for a webinar for teachers and educators to discuss Jewish resistance to the Holocaust as exemplified by the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and various forms of Jewish resistance in the Vilnius region (Lithuania). 

During the webinar we will present: 

  • primary sources (photos, documents, maps, poems)
  • teaching resources (infographics, lesson plans)
  • guidelines on how to address this topic in the classroom

that could be used in the preparation of a lesson about Jewish resistance to the Holocaust. 

The meeting will be held on Zoom in English.

The 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising will be commemorated on 19 April 2023. The event is part of the international remembrance campaign: https://www.warsaw1943.pl/en/

About the speakers:

Dr Daniela Ozacky Stern is a scholar of Jewish resistance to the Holocaust. She is a lecturer at the Holocaust Studies Program at Western Galilee College, Israel, and a researcher at the Institute of Holocaust Research at Bar-Ilan University. She was the director of the Moreshet Holocaust Archive for over a decade. Ozacky Stern earned a PhD in Jewish History at the University of Haifa, studying the Jewish partisans in Lithuania and Belarus during the Holocaust. She earned a master’s degree from the School of History at Tel-Aviv University, and her thesis dealt with Nazi propaganda instigated by Joseph Goebbels. Her thesis was published as a book.

Dr Justyna Majewska is sociologist and curator, who works at the Research Department at the Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute. She contributes to the Encyclopaedia of the Warsaw Ghetto and Lexicon of the Lodz Ghetto research projects. Her latest publication is entitled ‘In One of the Courtyards, Several Tall Trees and a Few Bushes were Growing. Green spaces in the Warsaw Ghetto’, in A Jewish Garden in the Gardens of the World Berlin, ed. Philipp Nielsen et al., Berlin: 2022. She is currently preparing a book on how sociological phenomenon of space and time were understood in the Warsaw Ghetto.

This webinar is part of the series of webinars ‘Hi-story Lessons – methods and resources for history teaching’.  

 

The series of webinars are delivered by Urszula Bijoś, coordinator of the ‘Hi-story Lessons: Teaching 20th-century European History’ project for the European Network Remembrance and Solidarity. Bijoś has a master’s degree in history from the University of Warsaw and is an educator, facilitating meetings and webinars as well as writing educational resources. She is the co-author of the ‘Cities and Memory’ guidebook series and aims to make history more accessible.
