Three years of the Oneg Szabat Program. What are we preparing for fall 2020?

The Oneg Szabat program will soon be celebrating the third anniversary of its foundation. In fall 2020 we will invite you to listen to a series of podcasts about the people who formed the Oneg Shabbat group and created the Underground Archive of the Warsaw Ghetto.

In September, in the first of a series of podcasts, we will talk about a man who, in the conditions of war, occupation and the Holocaust, created a unique initiative of the civil resistance movement in the Warsaw Ghetto – Emanuel Ringelblum. We will ask what Ringelblum believed in, try to understand from where he took his strength to act, why he was most interested in the stories of ordinary people and what influence he had on the final shape of the Archive hidden in 1942 in the ruins of the Warsaw ghetto.

Subsequent episodes of podcasts will introduce Rachela Auerbach and Kalonimus Kalman Szapiro. Together with the researchers and translators of the Archive, we will look at life in the Warsaw Ghetto through the prism of the accounts written by Rachela Auerbach and the documents left by the famous tzadik. We will look at journals, letters, texts of sermons.

And in October, we will invite you to participate in webinars.

On October 8, we will talk to the Director of the Jewish Historical Institute, professor Paweł Śpiewak on the role of the Underground Archive of the Warsaw Ghetto in preserving the memory of the Holocaust. On October 22, we will hold a discussion with the translators involved in the process of making the full edition of the Ringelblum Archive available in English.

The fate of the Jewish nation is so difficult to grasp and convey in writing – such a reflection keeps reappearing in Lewin’s „Diary, in fact becoming its main thread. Lewin writes the daily chronicle of the ghetto, documenting worsening conditions of living, famine, diseases, increasing terror, eventually – the Great Deportation and the stories of survivors, who „lead a bitter life”, with „wings of death waving above them”. He had continued his work even after his wife Luba was sent to Treblinka.

Bread has a golden color. Salomea Ostrowska
We can gather information about Salomea Ostrowska only indirectly, by studying her writings for Oneg Shabbat. Thanks to her work at the Quarantine Service at 109/111 Leszno street, she could have delivered a description of the institution’s functioning to the Ringelblum Archive. On the basis of 18 conversations with former inmates of the Pomiechówek camp for displaced persons, she wrote an essay – „Pomiechówek, the death camp”. Her date and place of death remain unknown.

He couldn’t bear the tragedy of the Ghetto. Szmuel Bresław
Szmul (Szmuel) Bresław was a Hashomer Hatzair activist, as well as a contributor and an editor of nearly all periodicals published by this organization in the Warsaw Ghetto. In 1942, he was invited by Emanuel Ringelblum to cooperate with Oneg Shabbat. A large collection of bulletins from radio monitoring was preserved in the Archive. He has also contributed a few of his own writings, such as an interview with Irena Adamowicz about Polish-Jewish relations, Henryk Gotland’s biography, a study – „The housing officer” and one report, „The disinfection column”. He was killed on 3 September 1942, after he wielded a knife against an armed German.
