Summer 2022: changes in the opening hours of the JHI Archive and Library

During the holiday season, the Library of the Jewish Historical Institute will be open at changed hours.

Ladies and Gentlemen,


please be advised that during the holiday season the JHI Library will be open at changed hours:

  • from 4 to 29 July, the reading room of the JHI library will be open from 09.30 to 17.00;
  • the reading room will be closed from August 1 to September 2.

Due to the changed working hours of the JHI reading room, during the summer holidays, the collections of the JHI Archive will be available for use:

  • from 4 to 29 July at the JHI Reading Room from 9:30 am to 5 pm;
  • From August 1 to September 2, due to the closure of the reading room, it will be possible to use only the scanned collections at two computer stations in the JHI Archive workshop, after prior reservation made by phone or e-mail: archiwum@jhi.pl

At the turn of 1944 and 1945, Zinovi Tolkachev, a Red Army soldier, painter, and graphic artist, made two series of drawings depicting German concentration camps and extermination centres: Majdanek and Auschwitz. Traces of fire from May 16, 1943. Restoration of the historic floor at the JHI
“The former Jewish residential district in Warsaw has ceased to exist. The great action ended with the blowing up of the Warsaw synagogue at 20:15. " Thus, in a report to SS-Obergruppenführer and General of Police Krüger of May 16, 1943, Jürgen Stroop described the demolition of the Great Synagogue in Tłomackie. As a result of the fire, its flames also burst into the neighboring building of the Main Judaic Library, now the seat of the Jewish Historical Institute. Despite the passage of over 75 years, traces of damage can be seen on the floor in the Institute’s hall.
