For three years the Department of Asian Studies at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań has been carrying out the programme “Cross-cultural dialogue as the basis of civil society” (the European Social Fund) which aims at developing education about the languages and cultures of Asia. In the framework of the programme annual conferences are held in the field of Asian languages and literatures. Scholars from various European and Asian academic centres, including Israel and Russia, take part in them. The research fields which are particularly strongly represented during the conferences are those connected with the history and culture of the Ashkenazi Jews and Karaites in the Polish — Lithuanian Commonwealth and Crimea. The latter of the fields, in particular the language and literature of Polish-Lithuanian Karaites, is the leading research topic at the Section of Turkic, Mongolian and Korean Studies as well as the Section of Hebrew, Aramaic and Karaite Studies at the Department of Asian Studies. The result of these interests is, inter alia, the launch ofKaraite Archives– annals devoted to Karaite studies which will come out from 2013.
