The book by Szymon Datner „The Fight and the Holocaust of the Białystok Ghetto” was published in 1946 by Wojewódzka Komisja Historyczna [Voivodeship Historical Committee] in Białystok. It was the first publication of this division of the Committee, for many years also one of few books — not only in Poland — about the Białystok Ghetto.
The account written down by Datner is a combination of testimony and an attempt of a historical reconstruction of facts (this issue is thoroughly analyzed by Katrin Stoll in a paper included in this volume). It is an intense book about a world which is now hard to imagine, though it is not that distant. It is a book asking uncomfortable questions, making it impossible to stay indifferent. The power of the content of The Fight and the Holocaust is determined not only by language filled with emotions, harshness of the judgements expressed by the author and an uncompromising nature of his appraisals, but also by consciousness that he is talking about experiences of himself, his murdered family and community, who he never stopped being part of till the end of his life.
The book was published in the series „CRITICAL ISSUE OF CENTRAL JEWISH HISTORICAL COMMISSION”.
