A WORLD HIDDEN IN BOOKS - exhibition

A WORLD HIDDEN IN BOOKS : EARLY HEBREW PRINTS from the collection of the JEWISH HISTORICAL INSTITUTE (May-September 2011)

Library of the Jewish Historical Institute holds 900 early Hebrew prints. For the first time in over 70 years, fifty exquisite items of the collection have been shown to general public. On May 11, 2011 the exhibition was open at ŻIH, the Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute on 3/5 Tlomackie Str. in Warsaw. The selection includes the very early 16th century Venetian products of the printing houses of Bomberg, Giustiniani and Bragadini, of Jewish printing workshops in Krakow and Lublin, several volumes of various editions of the Babilonian Talmud, prints from Prague and Amsterdam, two competitive editions of the Yiddish version of the Bible (Uri Fajbush’s and Josef Athias’s), confiscated copies of heretical works which were censured by rabbinical authorities, illuminated Passover Haggadah, fine engravings and illustrations from medical and astronomical works, and even the earliest Hebrew books published in Warsaw.
