Dawid Sierakowiak’s Diary

(...) dinners at the hash houses are terrible, because there are no potatoes, vegetables and groats in the ghetto.

Wide sierakowiak 13 lipca 1941

Rumkowski gave starving ghetto population a kick. Being given some wheat flour he baked 40-decagram loaves which he is giving away in special rations together with 5 decagrams of honey (40 pf for a loaf, 14 pf for honey). Folks haven’t been happier forever. There hasn’t been white bread in the ghetto since last summer. Worse thing is, however, that dinners at the hash houses are terrible, because there are no potatoes, vegetables and groats in the ghetto. There is some pea, a bit of wheat flour and some barley flakes from which „soups” are prepared. There are 7 decagrams of ”solids” per 1 liter of water. From time to time one can come across some sauerkraut. The only comforting thing is that fields are ripening, and they say that abundance is great this year. Hopefully, this year’s harvest will also be full of good news!
