What’s left of the yiddish avant-garde?

Karolina Szymaniak, Joanna Lisek and Piotr Paziński will discuss the phenomenon of the Jewish writers, poets, artists and photographers who formed an unusual, revolutionary artistic society in the 1920’s.

The avant-garde liked to describe themselves as: a band of vagabonds, vagrants, tramps etc., names which emphasized their distance from and opposition to the fixed social structures, their lack of roots and their constant motion — in accordance with the crazy rhythm of modernity.

Who exactly were the members of this “young, joyous, singing rabble”? How was this explosion of artistic energy received by the established pre-war writers and the slightly more conservative Jews?

What remains of this short-lived but intense Yiddish avant-garde?
