Szalom Asz was a playwright of a very complex personality. On one hand people called him a genius; he was the critics’ favorite one and spiritual authority among the Jewish artistic circles. On the other hand, however, he often exceeded the limits of taboo, among others, by making prostitutes and lesbians main characters of his plays, which as a result evoked strong emotion among the audience. Quite often, the premieres of his plays have to take place in the company of the police; fights and demonstrations broke out among the audience. About the unknown aspects of Asz’s works will talk dr Agata Dąbrowska from the University of Oslo.
