We are pleased to announce that the next volume of the completed edition of Ringelblum’s Archives is already on sale in bookstores. The edition is the fruit of a project which was initiated in the JHI in 2010. The collection of the documents referring to the fates of the Jews in Łódź between 1939 and 1942 was edited by an expert on the topic and at the same time excellent translator of Yiddish: dr Monika Polit.
In the publication, the reader will find variety of materials: accounts of escapees from Łódź to Warsaw (especially during the first months of the occupation), letters of Łódź Jews to their families and relatives in Warsaw, official announcements signed by the head of the Ältestenrat (”Council of Elders”), Modrechai Chaim Rumkowski as well as the texts of his speeches, official lists of prices and labor workplaces, ration coupons and special money of the Lodz ghetto. What draws attention is a collection of anonymous poems: satires on the ghetto bureaucracy, officials and Rumkowski himself.
A unique document of everyday life of the ghetto is a calendar of 1942 made by Szmul Rozensztajn, where anniversaries of “important” events in the Łódź Ghetto were marked. They include: the opening of an out-patients’ clinic, the appointment of an investigations office, the establishment of the secretary office of requests and complaints at the president office, and, of course, birthday of the head of theÄltestenrat. Each page of the calendar is provided with a quote from Rumkowski’s speeches. For example, “For the good of the ghetto, you have to follow my lead!”, „When it comes to the good of the public, the individual is not important”, „The Litzmannstadt Ghetto is the work of creation.”
The book is traditionally accompanied by a CD with scans of the original documents.
