Today, at 10am on the dot, in front of the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes in Warsaw it was possible to hear wailing sirens. They were a signal to begin the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. The ceremony was inaugurated with the national anthem. The guests who had come to Muranów were greeted by the President of Warsaw, Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz.
Speeches were given by the President of Poland Bronisław Komorowski and one of the last living participants in the uprising — Sychma Ratajzer-Rotem, alias ‘Kazik’, as well as representatives of Jewish communities.
During the ceremony, Canotor Joseph Malovany performed El Malle Racgamim and a rabbi said Kaddish.
After the official part of the event, the guests walked to Umschlagplatz Monument.
The events related to the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising will last till 16th May, which is when the Great Synagogue at Tłomackie was blown up. It is also a symbolic date marking the end of the uprising in the ghetto.
