We recommend the exhibition „Rabbi, Rabbi, Rabbi”

The amount of people visiting our exhibition has surprised even us. Come and see the exhibition which many people write about.

„On the top storey of the building of the JHI, we hung paintings, drawings, graphics and photographs of bearded men of faces of wise men. Some of them are holding a book and posing against the background of a bookshelf filled with volumes. ’We placed their portraits low so that everyone would be able to look the rabbis in the eyes,’ says Teresa Śmiechowska, the curator of the exhibition”

„’It is not a typical historical exhibition. First of all, we are showing works of art. Apart from one painting rented from the Historical Museum of the City of Krakow, all of them come from the collections of the JHI,’ emphasises the curator.”

Gazeta Stołeczna

„One of the co-organizers of the exhibition, Rafał Żebrowski, suggested looking at the portraits of the rabbis, which constitute the main part of the exhibition, not only as at images of wise men, experts on religious law, but also as at people deeply involved in the life of their community, people who helped their neighbours.”

„It was necessary to organize the exhibition as spirituality of the Polish Jews nowadays is not researched that much and therefore presented less often,” said Paweł Śpiewak, director of the JHI, while opening the exhibition. He added that generally it was hard to imagine the history of the Jews, including the Polish Jews, without the history of spirituality. Above all, it is the history of rabbis and Yeshivas.”

„For over eight hundred years, lives of the Jews in Poland concentrated around a community, synagogue, prayer house, Yeshiva. Due to the high level of education, Yeshivas operating on the territory of the Republic of Poland were very prestigious. The rabbis who directed them constituted a social, spiritual and religious elite. A lot of eminent thinkers and leaders were among them. They became famous not only in Jewish circles in Poland and abroad, but also in Polish history and culture. "

„The exhibition brings back memory of eminent rabbis, experts on the Talmud, for example, Szalom Szachna, one of the founders of Polish school for studying the Talmud and founder of the famous Yeshiva in Lublin, and Moshe ben Isreael Isserles aka Remu; both of them lived in the 16th century.”

„The exhibition shows also rabbis who were active also during the partitions of Poland. Their patriotism and a gesture of solidarity with their fellow countrymen were reminded. For example, in 1861, Chief Rabbi of Warsaw Dow Ber Meisels ordered to close all synagogues as a form of protest against the profanation of Catholic Churches conducted by the Russian army. On the other hand, in 1878, in the Great Synagogue in Warsaw, Rabbi Izaak Cylkow preached a sermon in the Polish language, against the ordinance of the Russian authorities.”

„At the exhibition we will see also short movies showing three rabbis, currently working in Poland (Michael Schudrich, Szalom Ber Stambler, and Stas Wojciechowicz) answering two questions: what it means to be a rabbi in the contemporary world and what it means to be a rabbi in Poland.”
